The Death of Destinies through Jealousy Part 1

Jealousy has never built anything. It has only ever torn down what God was trying to raise up. Scripture gives us several examples of people whose destinies were cut short, not because God rejected them, but because they allowed envy to take the driver's seat of their lives. Here are five of them.

1. Cain. The first murder in human history was born out of jealousy. Genesis 4:4 to 5 tells us God had respect for Abel's offering but not for Cain's, and instead of examining his own heart, Cain let anger and envy consume him. Genesis 4:8 records the tragic result, "Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him." Cain lost his brother, his identity, and his place, all because he could not celebrate what God was doing in someone else's life.

2. King Saul. Saul was chosen, anointed, and given a kingdom, yet he could not bear the sound of David's praise. 1 Samuel 18:8 to 9 tells us that after the women sang David's victories, "Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him... And Saul eyed David from that day and forward." That single seed of jealousy grew into years of pursuit, torment, and eventually Saul's own destruction on the battlefield. He died chasing the very man he was jealous of.

3. Miriam. Even those close to leadership are not exempt from this danger. Numbers 12:1 to 2 shows Miriam and Aaron speaking against Moses, questioning his unique position with God. Verse 10 tells us the consequence, "the cloud departed from off the tabernacle, and, behold, Miriam became leprous, white as snow." Jealousy toward someone else's assignment brought a season of shame and isolation upon her.

4. Haman. Haman had wealth, status, and the king's favor, yet one man who refused to bow consumed his thoughts day and night. Esther 5:13 reveals his heart, "Yet all this availeth me nothing, so long as I see Mordecai the Jew sitting at the king's gate." His obsession with destroying Mordecai led him to build the very gallows he would eventually die on, Esther 7:10 confirms it, "So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai."

5. Korah. Korah, along with Dathan and Abiram, envied the leadership God had placed on Moses and Aaron. Numbers 16:3 shows their accusation, "Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them." Their rebellion did not end in promotion, it ended in judgment. Numbers 16:32 tells us "the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up." Their jealousy did not just cost them a position, it cost them their lives.

Every name on this list had potential, position, or purpose, yet jealousy became the weapon that dismantled it all. Guard your heart. Celebrate others. Do not let envy write the final chapter of your destiny.
